Bench Notes: Tackling a .277 SIG Fury AR-10 Build

 

We recently took on a unique project here at the shop: a custom build chambered in .277 SIG Fury.

If you aren't familiar, this is the civilian commercial variant of the US Army’s new 6.8x51mm cartridge. It’s an incredibly capable round, but building for it comes with a specific set of rules and mechanical constraints that deviate from your standard black rifle build.


Here is a breakdown of how we approached this build and why we made certain component choices.

The Pressure and Platform Reality

First, let’s talk logistics. The .277 Fury requires an AR-10 (SR-25/Large Frame) platform, not your standard AR-15. Because of this, we couldn't use our own Frog Arm LLC FAL-15 lower receivers, which are strictly mil-spec AR-15 dimensions. Instead, we sourced a high-quality AR-10 lower from another manufacturer to lay the groundwork.

Second, a massive caveat on pressure: the military's 6.8x51mm round utilizes a hybrid stainless steel/brass case to handle a staggering 80,000 psi of chamber pressure. The currently available civilian barrels cannot handle that. This build is strictly rated for the traditional, all-brass civilian commercial .277 Fury cartridges, which top out at a lower (but still formidable) 65,000 psi. Running the military-grade 80k psi ammo through a standard civilian barrel is a recipe for catastrophic failure.

The Upper and Control Upgrades

Because the .277 Fury shares the same rim diameter and overall length dimensions as a .308 Winchester, we were able to start with a standard .308 upper receiver group. From there, we swapped the factory barrel out for our .277 Fury barrel, ensuring the headspacing was dead-on.


To round out the upper receiver, we tossed the stiff, mil-spec charging handle in the parts bin and replaced it with an ambidextrous Rise Armament AR-10 charging handle. The extended latches make it a hell of a lot easier to clear the optics and manipulate the bolt smoothly, whether you're shooting dominant or off-hand.

Rethinking the Trigger Job

Moving to the large-frame platform completely changed our approach to tuning the fire control group.

On our standard AR-15 builds, we have a few proprietary tricks we use to lighten and smooth out the trigger pull. However, you can't just drop those same tricks into an AR-10. Harder rifle-caliber primers require a heavier hammer and a stiffer hammer spring to ensure reliable ignition. If you start lightening the springs on an AR-10 to chase a match-grade feel, you're going to introduce light-primer strikes and failures to fire.

To get that crisp, custom-tuned feel without sacrificing mechanical reliability, we opted for a drop-in unit: the TriggerTech AR-10 Duty (Single-Stage).


The Results on the Scale

We went with the flat-trigger shoe version of the TriggerTech Duty, which is factory-rated for a 3.5 lb pull.

When we threw it on our digital trigger scale, it actually came in a bit lighter, consistently breaking right at 3 lbs. More importantly, it delivers an incredibly clean break with virtually zero creep and a remarkably short reset. It gives the shooter a trigger feel that is perfectly comparable to our custom hand-tuned work, all while maintaining the heavy hammer strike needed to reliably ignite large rifle primers.


To button up the fire control group and ensure absolutely zero walk-out under the heavy recoil impulse of the large-frame rifle, we locked the cassette housing in place with a set of dedicated anti-walk trigger pins. It's cheap insurance to keep everything perfectly aligned and secure.


To finish out the lower controls, we threw on a Radian Talon ambidextrous safety selector. Because the customer is in the military and needs to maintain consistent muscle memory with their service weapon, we configured the Talon for the traditional 90-degree throw rather than the short-throw option. It gives them the crisp, high-end feel Radian is known for, while keeping the manual of arms exactly where their duty training expects it to be. Combined with the ambi charging handle up top, it makes running this heavy-hitting AR-10 seamless.

Finishing the Package

To wrap up the ergonomics, we ditched the loose, rattling mil-spec stock and upgraded to a Magpul CTR stock, giving the rifle a much more solid, wobble-free cheek weld and a friction-lock system to hold its position. For target acquisition right out of the box, we outfitted the top rail with a set of reliable flip-up MBUS sights so the customer has a solid baseline sighting system ready to go.


We didn't just want to hand over a bare rifle, so we sent this custom build out the door as a complete deployment package: fully vetted, paired with two PMAGs, and protected inside a premium canvas tactical soft case.

It was an awesome challenge stepping outside our usual build architecture to tackle a newer commercial round, and the final rifle is absolute glass.

FAL-15 7.62x39, right-side charging, piston driven rifle.

  This is truly a one-of-a-kind build. Featuring the Bear Creak Arsenal’s patented right-side charging upper, Adams Arms carbine piston kit, and Frog Arms custom lower. This build required carbide bits to drill and tap the holes in the side of the Adams Arms bolt carrier using a template based on the Bear Creek direct-impingement bolt carrier. This transformed the Adams Arms bolt carrier into a right-side charging bolt carrier for this custom upper. Adams Arms piston is installed with their 15-inch M-Lok rail and barrel nut (the Adams Arms piston does not work with the Bear Creek barrel nut). In defense of Adams Arms, their piston kits were originally designed for mil-spec barrel nuts. Adams Arms are great pistons and I have a couple in my personal collection. Compatibility with more manufacturers’ barrel nuts is one of the reasons Frog Arms is now using Superlative Arms piston Kits.

The Sig Sauer P320: A Crisis of Confidence?

****Updated****  Recent forensic developments regarding the July 2024 fatal shooting at F.E. Warren Air Force Base further substantiate my findings. While the incident was initially reported as an uncommanded discharge of an M18 (P320 variant), prompting a service-wide safety pause, investigations later revealed the narrative was falsified. Two airmen, Sarbjot Badesha and Matthew Rodriguez , have since pleaded guilty to making false official statements to cover up a case of gross negligence. Their testimony confirmed that the primary suspect intentionally pointed and fired the weapon in a 'joking manner,' rather than the firearm malfunctioning as initially claimed by 'Guntube' commentators.
