The Sig Sauer P320: A Crisis of Confidence?

In light of the tragic death of an Airman at F.E. Warren Air Force Base and a growing list of accidental discharges involving the Sig Sauer P320 and its military variant, the M18, it's time to ask hard questions. These incidents, many occurring while the weapon was holstered, have shaken trust in a pistol once hailed for its modularity and innovation.

The FBI’s Ballistic Research Facility report revealed that under certain conditions, the P320 can discharge without a trigger pull. That finding, paired with ICE’s immediate ban and the Air Force Global Strike Command’s suspension of the M18, has triggered a wave of concern across law enforcement and military communities. Some departments, like Chicago PD and the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, have already pulled the pistol from service.

Yet Sig Sauer continues to deny that there’s a design flaw. In a March 2025 statement, the company asserted that the P320 “cannot, under any circumstances, discharge without a trigger pull” and dismissed the allegations as “lies and misinformation”. They’ve even filed lawsuits to block bans and silence critics.

But with lawsuits mounting, injuries documented, and confidence eroding, one must wonder: Can Sig Sauer survive in the U.S. firearms market if it loses its military and law enforcement contracts? The P320 was once the crown jewel of the Modular Handgun System. Now, it’s at the center of a reckoning.

Given the risks outlined and the lack of resolution, our shop has made the decision that the M18 will no longer be used as a duty weapon. For the time being, it will be relegated to static range training only, where safety protocols can be tightly controlled. The well-being of our personnel comes first, and until trust in the platform is restored, we’re stepping back.

M1 Garand upgrades

Another piece of history came through the shop: the semiautomatic rifle that won the war for US Gi’s during WWII. The Famous Springfield M1 Garand, which saw service from 1936 to 1957, was replaced by its big brother, the M14 (M1A). The M1 Garand is a .30 Cal (.30-06 Springfield, gas-operated, eight-round “clip” feed rifle, where the shooter places the clip into the internal “magazine”. Yes, it used a clip. Today, we have the luxury of using box feed magazines, which were one of the differences between its big brother, the M14(M1A) rifle. They changed the furniture, re-chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO, and added a 20-round box feed magazine. Interesting fact, the M1 Garand was also re-chambered to 7.62x51 and saw action early in the Korean conflict before being retired from service. A common injury from the M1 Garand is called “Garand-thumb”. This is where the shooter’s thumb gets smashed by the bolt slamming home during the loading process.  Thumb trapped by bolt. The painful ...
